Vehicle Break-Ins

Seems every day I see broken glass as I walk around Dyckman St. and neighboring blocks. My car has sadly been broken into twice in two months. Needless to say I won't be trying to park around here anymore (not that any spots are available with all the "valet parking" going on at restaurants)

In light of the fact that the 34th precinct is too busy ticketing chessplayers to deal with real crime, does anyone have recommendations on where this activity seems to be most prevalent to start a watch? I know there was an initiative earlier this year to have neighbors join together to patrol the neighborhood regularly. Is this still going on? I'd love to participate.
